FAQs

Common questions about using Ember.

General

What is Ember?

Ember is a collaborative planning app for outdoor adventures and small group trips. Create events, invite your crew, manage packing lists, track expenses, and stay ready together.

How do I create an account?

Open app.makeember.com or the Ember app, then sign up with email, Google, or Sign in with Apple.

Can I invite friends to a trip?

Yes. Create an adventure, then invite people with a link or code so everyone can RSVP, pack, and share updates in one place.

Does Ember process payments?

No. Ember tracks shared expenses and settlements inside a trip. It does not move money, book travel, or process real-world payments.

How do I delete my account?

In the app, go to Settings and delete your account. You can also email [email protected] from the address on your Ember account and request deletion.

Buddies

What is an Adventure Buddy?

A Buddy is a mutual connection between two Ember accounts. It’s separate from being on the same adventure — you can share a trip without being Buddies, and stay Buddies without an active trip.

How do I invite someone to be my Buddy?

Send a Buddy invite by email, their profile invite code (from My profile), or from their profile in the app. They need to accept before you’re connected.

Can Buddies add me to an adventure automatically?

By default, yes. Turn on Require event acceptance in Settings if you want Buddy adventure invites to need your approval. People who aren’t Buddies always need acceptance when joining through an event link or code.

What’s the difference between a profile code and an event code?

Your profile code is a short personal code for Buddy invites and referrals. An event code or link is for joining a specific adventure.

What happens if I remove a Buddy?

Removing a Buddy only ends the Buddy connection. It does not remove either of you from adventures you already share.

Packing Lists

What’s the difference between shared and personal packing items?

Shared items are visible to the whole crew. Personal items are only visible to you, so you can track private gear without cluttering the group list.

Who can mark packing items as done?

For shared items, assigned people (or everyone, when assigned that way) can update completion. For personal items, only you can mark them done.

Can I use packing templates?

Yes. Ember includes system templates by adventure type, and you can save your own (up to 10). Applying a template seeds the shared list; personal template items stay yours only.

How does packing affect readiness?

Readiness is based on RSVP and packing progress. Expenses, weather, and Cindra tips do not change the readiness score.

Can we discuss a packing item?

Shared packing items support threaded discussion in the app. Mention someone with @ when you want them notified.

Stops

What are Stops?

Stops are your adventure itinerary — a timeline of places and times for the trip. Ember does not book hotels or navigate turn-by-turn.

What can I add to a stop?

Choose a type (Stay, Activity, Travel, or Other), then add a title, place, start and end time (or all-day), notes, and tags. You can reorder stops and view them by day.

What if two stops overlap?

Ember warns you about overlaps. It does not auto-fix the schedule — edit times yourself if something conflicts.

Can Cindra help with stops?

Yes, when your adventure has an active upgrade. Cindra can suggest a full set of stops to review, or offer a single suggestion when you’re adding one. Always check times and places before you commit.

Do stops affect readiness?

No. Readiness is driven by RSVP and packing only.

Expenses

Does Ember transfer money between people?

No. Expenses and settlements are organizing records only. Ember is not a bank, wallet, or payment processor — settle up in real life, then log it in the app.

Who can track expenses?

Any adventure member can add and manage expenses. Expense tracking is available on adventures without spending Embers.

How do balances work?

Each expense has a payer and shares. Ember shows who owes whom. Organizers can use Simplify Debt for suggested fewer payments — those are estimates, not legal obligations.

Can I change the trip currency later?

The adventure currency locks after the first expense is added. Changing a label later does not convert amounts that were already recorded.

Can I attach a receipt?

Yes. You can add a receipt photo when logging an expense. On upgraded adventures, Cindra can help prefill details from the receipt — always review before saving.

Security

How do I sign in securely?

Ember supports email and password, Google, and Sign in with Apple. Use a strong unique password for email accounts, and keep your device’s lock screen enabled.

Can I change my password or log out everywhere?

Email accounts can change password from Settings (with confirmation). You can also log out of all devices, which ends every session including the one you’re using.

Who can see my information?

Content you add to a shared adventure is visible to that adventure’s members. Personal packing items are intended to stay visible only to you. Ember accounts are for people 18 or older (or the legal age of majority where you live).

How does Cindra handle my data?

When you use Cindra, limited adventure context may be sent to AI providers to generate tips. Avoid putting highly sensitive personal information into fields or messages that may be included in those requests.

What happens when I delete my account?

Account deletion removes your profile and related data as designed by the service, including adventures you organize. Adventures you only joined can continue for other members without you. For more detail, see our Privacy Policy.
